In Bennett Simpson’s opening essay for Ruff’s “jpegs“, the Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles remarks: “Jpegs is about the way photographs have become most widely experienced today, as digital images on the Web, compressed and hyper-functionalized…” Presenting a collection of images found on the web, and enlarged by the artist, “jpegs” is meant as both a social and technological reflection characteristic of the photographer’s work. Depicted pixelated scenes range from an al-Qaeda training camp to architectural portrayals, a mix of toxic topics sure to confound many a viewer. You might find the end result slightly blurry and too popular for your tastes, but you can’t deny Ruff’s research meticulosity and technological ingenuity.
